Why choose Couple session in the Algarve?
A couple photoshoot in the Algarve usually starts from one image people already know: the double arch at Praia da Marinha, ochre rock standing in clear green water. The difficulty is that everyone else knows it too, and by ten on a summer morning there is a line of people waiting their turn at the railing. So this is planned backwards from the crowd. You meet the photographer as the first light reaches the cliffs, spend 30 min walking the path along the top, and are gone before the coach parties arrive. Nervous couples tend to relax faster here than in a city, because nobody is watching.
Where we photograph in the Algarve
Marinha is the default because the arch photographs best from above, from the path that runs along the clifftop, and that path gives several angles within a few hundred metres without anyone needing to climb down. Stay on the trodden side of the fencing; the edge is eroding and no frame worth keeping is made from the lip. If you would rather avoid the famous view, there are two honest swaps. Lagos has the stacks of Ponta da Piedade, wilder and more broken up, which suit couples who like texture. Tavira, in the east, has the lagoon of the Ria Formosa, flat and empty and nothing like the cliffs, for a softer and more private result.
The best time in the Algarve
At Marinha, aim to start within half an hour of sunrise. Light then rakes across the rock from the east and brings out its colour, and in July or August that half-hour is also the only one that is both cool and quiet. Autumn is the season for couples here: through October the water is still warm enough to want to swim afterwards, and the path is close to empty. In February the light stays low through the whole day, so a later, more comfortable start is possible, and there may be almond blossom on the drive in.

FAQ — Couple session in the Algarve
We feel silly being photographed in public. Will people stare?
At sunrise there is usually almost nobody on the Marinha path, which is one reason the session starts so early. The few walkers who pass are there for the view, not for you. The photographer keeps you moving and talking for the first few minutes, so it feels like a walk rather than a performance.
What if there is wind or a grey sky on our morning?
A breeze moves hair and clothes and usually helps a coastal frame. Heavy cloud over ochre rock is still workable and often gentler on skin. Rain that makes the path slippery is not, and then the session moves to another morning of your trip at no cost to you.
We are staying in Albufeira. How far is it to the arch?
Marinha sits between Albufeira and Lagos, which are about forty minutes apart, so from Albufeira it is a fairly short drive. For a sunrise start that still means leaving in the dark. If you are based further west, the photographer may suggest Lagos and its stacks instead.
