Down there, with the rock rising around you, it feels private even when the clifftop has people on it. If the tide is high on your morning, the frames are made from the top instead. Couples staying around Tavira can swap the cliffs for the Ria Formosa’s calm water and salt pans, which suits a honeymoon spent resting rather than exploring.
The best time in the Algarve
Piedade is a sunrise location, and the platform at its foot appears only on a low tide, so the start minute comes from the tide table for your date, not from habit. Summer honeymoons have no real alternative to dawn; by mid-morning the stairway is busy and the light has turned hard. Autumn honeymooners get the best of it, with warm water through October and quiet stairs. A spring wedding means a February or March honeymoon here, and that is a fine choice: the whole day is low-sun and the coastline nearly deserted.

Can we wear our wedding clothes for the photographs?
Yes, and some couples do exactly that, especially if the wedding itself was somewhere much plainer. A long dress catches the breeze nicely at the top of the cliffs. If you plan to go down the stairway to the water, bring a change, because salt spray and wet rock are hard on fine fabric.
We arrive on Tuesday and leave on Saturday. Is that enough notice?
Usually, outside the busiest weeks. The photographer and time are normally confirmed the same working day, and the tide is looked up for the mornings you have. In July and August the early slots go first, so it helps to book before you fly rather than once you have landed.
Is the stairway down to the water difficult?
It is a long flight of steps, fine for most people in flat shoes, and the climb back up is the harder half. If either of you would rather not, the frames from the clifftop path are just as strong, and the photographer plans the session so that skipping the stairs costs nothing.
