Where we photograph in the Algarve
Up on the Piedade headland outside Lagos, at dawn, is the classic choice and earns it: a wide view, very few people at that hour, and plenty of rock for a photographer to stand behind without looking out of place. Praia da Marinha has the more famous arch, but the viewpoint is a single point that fills quickly in summer, so it only works at first light. The Ria Formosa near Tavira is the quiet alternative for someone who wants calm water and no audience. Its catch is that the land is flat, so the photographer works from much further back. The edge of a cliff is never the spot, however good it looks on a phone. Whichever you choose, the photographer walks it at the same hour a day or two before and decides where to stand, so on the morning the only person improvising is you.
The best time in the Algarve
For the cliffs, aim for the minutes just after sunrise; the walk to the agreed point is easier in half-light than in the dark, and the sun is up by the time you kneel. In July and August that is the only option, since the paths fill and the light goes hard soon after. At the Ria, a late-afternoon slot at high tide gives a mirror of water behind you. If the date is flexible, October is the best compromise between warm air and quiet paths, and in February you may well have the whole coast to yourselves.

My partner hates early starts. What excuse works for a walk at dawn?
Sunrise walks are a normal thing to do on holiday here, especially in summer heat, so the plan is rarely suspicious. People frame it as a coffee and a walk before the beach. The photographer will already be in place, and the exact meeting point is confirmed with you the day before rather than on the morning.
Can the proposal happen on a boat to the Benagil cave?
It is possible to arrange, but it is a separate boat or kayak trip with its own operator and rules, and swimming access to the cave has been restricted. Photographing from a second boat is a different booking. Most people find a clifftop on land gives a clearer picture and fewer variables.
What happens if it rains on the morning we planned?
The photographer contacts you early and you decide together. If your trip has a spare morning, the session moves there at no cost. If it does not, a light shower can pass before sunrise; a wet stairway or slippery path is the point at which it is called off for safety.
