Where we photograph in Coimbra

If you are visiting the university anyway, the Escadas Monumentais are the public granite stairway climbing to it: shaded in the morning, full of texture, and a short walk from the lower town. If you prefer the classic view of the city, the far bank of the Mondego at Parque Verde gives it: the whole old town above the water, tower on top, with a flat park to walk in. The Paço das Escolas terrace is inside the ticketed university visit; you can certainly take your own photos there, but the session works better at one of the free spots.
The best time in Coimbra
If you arrive in the morning, use the stairway while it is still in shade. If you have the afternoon free, save the riverbank for the hour before sunset, when the light faces the hill. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons. Avoid the Queima das Fitas week in May unless you want to see the student celebrations, in which case the photographs will include them.

Can the session start at the university after our visit there?
It can start right below it. Finish your ticketed visit, walk out and down to the Escadas Monumentais, and meet the photographer on the steps. Inside the university the visit has its own rules, which the session does not try to work around.
Is it worth it for a family with teenagers?
Often more than for anyone. Teenagers who refuse posed photos relax when the photographer keeps things moving and lets them walk, talk and roll their eyes on camera. The riverbank, with space to wander and no audience, usually suits them better than the stairs.
