The terrace of the Paço das Escolas is ticketed and full of visitors, which makes it a poor playground. Pick the riverbank or the stairs, not both.
The best time in Coimbra
Book the morning, whatever the month. Children are fresher, the park is quieter and nobody is hungry yet. The stairway is in shade at that hour, which spares everyone from squinting. Late afternoon has lovely light on the riverbank but tends to meet tired children; it works best for families with teenagers. In summer, start early before the heat builds. Avoid the Queima das Fitas week in May if you can, when the city is loud and full. If the weather turns, the session is moved at no cost.
