An evening elopement runs the other way along the river: start at Praça do Comércio in the afternoon, then a car west to Doca de Santo Amaro under the bridge for the last hour of sun. Belém fits either if you want monumental stone, early. The ceremony location is yours to choose — if it is a civil marriage, the conservatória itself — and the route is planned around it.
The best time in Lisbon
Think in halves of the day. A morning elopement works best in October to March, when sunrise is at a reasonable hour and the city is quiet. An evening elopement is a summer and early autumn plan: in September the river light at seven is the best thing in the city. Avoid August if you can — the heat makes a five-hour walk hard and the crowds fill every frame. In winter, a clear day gives low sun that lasts for hours, which suits a slow day.
