Sete Cidades holds the celebrated twin-lake view and deserves an attempt when the west is bright, though in high season expect to share the rim with a line of phones held aloft. Pick one; half an hour does not stretch to two.

Dawn for the craters, when viewpoints sit almost empty and an evening forecast still holds true. Late afternoon also works during long summer days, particularly at Furnas, where low sun catches the vapour. June and July supply blue hydrangea hedges plus the steadiest conditions of the year. From October through February comes the heaviest rain, but also an island nearly free of tourists, something certain couples prize above any guaranteed blue sky. Residents of Ponta Delgada can simply wait for a calm weekday morning.

We are only on São Miguel for two days. Is that enough?
Tight, though workable. With two mornings available, the chance that one crater or Furnas suits is decent, and Furnas performs even when neither caldera shows. Given a single day, we would plan for Furnas from the start instead of staking everything on a view that might never emerge from the cloud.
Do we need to hire a car?
Almost certainly. Every location worth the session lies outside Ponta Delgada, scattered across opposite ends of the island, and the start is early. Share your accommodation details at booking; a meeting point gets chosen around your route, and the night before you receive precise instructions on where to pull over.
What do we wear if it might rain?
Whatever you would wear on a countryside walk, in shades that stand up to wet green: ink blue, rust, cream, olive. Pack a decent waterproof and do not plan on hiding it; two people sharing a single hood amid the steam make a far better picture than two people shivering in linen. Grippy soles matter more than matching shoes.
