Why choose Family session in the Azores?

A family photographer in the Azores juggles two unpredictable forces, weather and small children, and success means ensuring only one misbehaves on any given morning. Families mostly book while on holiday, with a hire car and a week on São Miguel, so the session can land on whichever morning looks kindest. Thirty minutes outdoors roughly matches a four-year-old’s patience, which is why location matters so much: somewhere kids can wander and explore without anyone pleading with them to stand still beside a sheer drop. Teenagers, meanwhile, tend to cooperate more readily when there is something genuinely odd to look at, and this island supplies that in abundance.

Where we photograph in the Azores

Furnas is the easiest choice with children, and frequently the best. Hissing vents and bubbling mud near the lake captivate them, so they end up looking at something real instead of the lens. Little ones need a hand near the hot ground, and the photographer picks a patch with space around it. Terra Nostra park charges admission, so including it is up to you; the fumarole area is free. Crater lakes give a more striking portrait across a view, but rims are exposed and windy, suiting families whose youngest is past the toddler stage. Lagoa do Fogo, quieter than Sete Cidades in summer, is the better of the two for that.

The best time in the Azores

Morning, and early, for the obvious reasons involving naps and meltdowns, plus one peculiar to this island: the session can be called off the night before and slid to another morning without anyone having stood about in the rain. July and August bring the most settled weather and the most visitors; families travelling in school holidays should expect company at viewpoints and lean on Furnas. Outside those weeks, an April or October morning offers gentler light and emptier paths. In winter, pack waterproofs for everyone and treat a dry hour as a gift.

What does the package include?

The package in the Azores covers: 15–20 retouched photographs; 30 minutes, one location; Private gallery within 48–72 hours. Nothing is added to the price after the session.

FAQ — Family session in the Azores

Is Furnas safe with toddlers?

The ground at the fumaroles is genuinely scalding in places and the water boils, so small children need holding near edges and should keep to the paths. Even so, families visit every day. The photographer selects a spot with breathing room and keeps things moving, rather than asking a two-year-old to freeze beside a steaming vent.

Can the grandparents join us?

Absolutely. A bigger group fits within the half hour if the full group frames come first, while everyone is fresh and smiling, followed by smaller combinations. Mention the headcount while booking. If anyone walks with difficulty, flag that too: it rules out rims and steers the session somewhere close to where cars can stop, which the photographer will locate.

It rained every day we were there. What happens?

Light rain does not stop anything at Furnas, and children in waterproofs splashing near the vapour make a cheerful set. When it truly pours, family sessions shift to another morning of your stay free of charge. List every day you could manage, not just the favourite, so there is always somewhere for the booking to go.
