Where we photograph in the Douro
Visitors without a car should choose Pinhão, and lose nothing by it. Trains stop beside the riverside, so the session can begin within sight of the platform: the blue azulejo panels showing grape pickers, the iron bridge, and water curving between steep walls of vines are all close together. Travellers with a hire car have a second option in São Leonardo de Galafura, a free lookout perched high over the valley, which gives the sweeping overhead view of the slopes that most people picture before they come. Settle on one or the other; the roads linking them are slow, and the session would vanish on the way.
The best time in the Douro
Pinhão suits the first part of the day, when the platform side is gently lit and before the coach and boat visitors arrive. Galafura is a late-afternoon place, because it looks into the descending sun. Month by month, harvest season fills the valley with activity and people, the weeks after it bring turning leaves and empty lanes, and April or May give soft green slopes. A visit in high summer means booking right after breakfast or close to sunset, with a bottle of water in the bag; at noon the air in the valley simply does not move.

FAQ — Holiday session in the Douro
We are only coming up from Porto for the day. Is that enough time?
Yes, provided the session happens in Pinhão and you travel by rail. Send us the times of your outward and return trains with the booking, and the photographer suggests a slot comfortably between them. The hilltop lookout is unrealistic on a day excursion unless somebody in your group is driving.
Can the train be in the photographs?
If one is standing at the platform while you are there, the photographer will happily use it, but nobody can guarantee it: the railway sets the timetable, not us. The tiled panels on the station building are a sure thing, and visitors often end up preferring those frames anyway.
Will the pictures be ready before our flight home?
In most cases. Delivery is within 48h, through a web link you can open on a phone, and the 15–20 edited images come in print-ready size plus smaller copies for messaging. The link keeps working once the holiday is over, so nothing is lost if you only download at home.
