Where we photograph in the Douro
The natural stage is the Miradouro de São Leonardo de Galafura. The photographer stands off to one side dressed like any other visitor. Should a detour up into the hills at sunset look suspicious to the person being asked, Pinhão is the low-key alternative: a walk along the river past the tiled station is something every couple staying in the valley does anyway, so it raises no eyebrows. Proposing on a quinta’s own grounds is possible only with the estate’s agreement, settled beforehand.
The best time in the Douro
Galafura faces the falling sun, so late afternoon is the moment, and the plan is worked out backwards from it: when you leave, where you park, the exact stretch of rail. Pinhão is for a morning stroll. Seasons count more than usual. In the harvest weeks the valley has more visitors and the estates are busy, which makes the evening viewpoint the safer bet; in spring and late autumn you may have the rail nearly to yourselves. Rule out midsummer middays entirely — nobody looks relaxed in that heat.

How does the photographer find us without giving it away?
Everything is pinned down the previous day: which section of railing, what minute you step up to it, the colours you will both be wearing. On the day the photographer is already in place, looking like any other sightseer with a lens — at a lookout, nobody gives that a second glance. On the day, do not improvise anything. Walk to the agreed place at the agreed time, and ask.
What if the weather closes in on the day we planned?
Then you postpone, quietly. Cloud sometimes pools in the valley and erases the view altogether, and going down on one knee in front of a white wall is nobody’s plan. A second date is pencilled in from the start, and a short message exchange the night before settles which one is used, so the switch never has to be explained.
Do we get any photographs of the two of us together afterwards?
Yes, that is part of it. Once the surprise is over and the hugging has calmed down, there are a few minutes of portraits with the ring visible and the valley behind you. People tend to value these more than they expect, because the proposal frames are candid and these are the ones they send to family.
