Why choose Wedding in the Douro?

Hiring a wedding photographer in the Douro means planning around something venues elsewhere never think about: the grape harvest. A quinta wedding takes place inside a working wine estate, and from roughly early September to mid-October that estate is also bringing in its year. Some couples want exactly that — the bustle, the smell of crushed fruit, slopes with people on them. Others want the valley still. Both are possible, but they are different weddings, and the date decides which one you get. Coverage lasts 10 hours and follows your schedule, not ours.

Where we photograph in the Douro

The venue is your quinta, and nearly all of the day happens there: preparation, ceremony, dinner. The photographer’s job is to find the best of it at each hour — the edge of the terrace for the vows if the light allows, whatever shade the house offers in the hottest part of the afternoon, the vine rows for the couple’s portraits. Leaving the estate for photographs is rarely worth it; even a short drive to a viewpoint keeps the couple from their guests for too long. The exception is a separate session the day before or after, at São Leonardo de Galafura or beside the river at Pinhão, booked on its own.

The best time in the Douro

Quintas take September bookings a long way ahead, because that month combines the harvest with warm, settled weather. Late September into early October keeps the warmth and gives gentler evenings. Late October is the quiet bet: the leaves turn, picking is finished and dates are easier, though nights cool fast and rain becomes possible. In July and August the valley is hot and airless, so the ceremony should be late enough that the portraits afterwards catch the low sun raking across the slopes.

What does the package include?

The package in the Douro covers: 400 retouched photographs; Ten hours of coverage; A timing plan agreed a month beforehand; Private gallery within three weeks. Nothing is added to the price after the session.

FAQ — Wedding in the Douro

Will the photographer coordinate with the quinta during the harvest?

Yes. A month before the wedding we agree a timing plan with you, and it includes what the estate is doing that week: whether picking will be visible, whether the lagares are in use, which areas are closed to guests. During the vindima the quinta is a workplace, and the photographer works around that rather than through it.

Can our guests be photographed treading grapes?

If the estate offers it and it is part of your day, certainly — it photographs brilliantly. But that is the quinta’s decision, and it depends on the week and on their own harvest. Ask them early, then tell us the plan so the photographer is at the lagar at the right moment with the right lens.

Many of our guests are staying in Porto. Does that affect the photography?

It affects the schedule. If guests arrive by coach, the ceremony time has to allow for the journey, and getting-ready frames and couple portraits are planned around it. Share the transport plan when we agree the timeline a month beforehand, so nobody spends the best of the evening light on a bus.
