We usually point honeymooners to the cape for the evening. The headland stands a hundred metres above the water with nothing beyond it but horizon, which gives the frames a sense of having arrived somewhere, and standing there is free. Expect wind and bring a jacket. The alternative is the forest road out towards Peninha, for couples who would rather have stillness than spectacle: tree trunks, ferns and often a veil of cloud. Neither needs a ticket or a permit. Pena and the other palaces require written authorisation for professional work, so we only plan around one when it genuinely matters to you, and then well ahead.
The best time in Sintra
On the cape, aim for the final hour before the sun goes down, when low light skims the water and lands on your faces. It is exposed and chilly at that hour in every season. April to June and September to October bring kinder evenings; a winter sunset comes early enough to leave a long dinner afterwards. For the forest, start soon after sunrise, ideally from October to April when mist is most dependable. In July and August the woods stay calm in the early morning even while the old town fills up.

We’re based in Lisbon for the trip. How long is the journey?
Roughly twenty-five minutes to Sintra and twenty more out to the cape. For an evening session, set off from Lisbon mid-afternoon so there is slack for parking and the short walk to the viewpoint. After dark a car or a pre-booked taxi is simpler than public transport. The photographer sends the precise meeting point the day before.
Can we wear our wedding clothes again?
Of course, and a long dress on the headland catches the wind beautifully. The path is uneven and the gusts are strong, so think twice about a cathedral-length veil and bring flat shoes for the walk. If you would rather look like travellers than newlyweds, wear what you have been living in all week. Pack something warm you do not mind being seen in.
What if cloud swallows the cape on our evening?
It happens: the cloud that clings to the Serra sometimes rolls down to the coast and erases the horizon. Then the photographer may propose moving to the woods, where fog becomes the point rather than the problem. If your dates are flexible, the session can shift instead, which is why an early slot in the honeymoon beats the final night.
