It is level, with trees for shade and benches for resting, and across the water the hill with the university tower gives a frame that is unmistakably Coimbra without any walking to reach it. A long dress moves well in the riverside breeze. At home, the photographer looks for the window with the softest light and works in that room only. Leave the university stairway and the tower terrace for a later visit with a pushchair; both mean climbing, and the terrace means queues and a ticket too.
The best time in Coimbra
Most people book between the thirtieth and thirty-sixth week, when the bump is clear and moving is still comfortable. By the water, aim for the last sixty minutes of sun: warm side light on the bump, the houses opposite glowing, and the afternoon heat gone. High summer turns that around, and a session soon after breakfast is the gentler choice. April, May, September and October rarely ask anything of you. At home, mid-morning light from a side window is usually the gentlest.

Can my partner and our toddler join for a few frames?
Yes. Usually the first two thirds belong to you alone, and the others are called in towards the end, so a small child is not left hanging about waiting for a turn. Mention ages when you book; small children are easier on the riverbank, where they can run between frames.
What if I go into labour early or am told to rest?
It happens, and the session simply moves. Maternity sessions are rescheduled at no cost when the date has to change. If an outdoor session is no longer comfortable, the photographer can come to your home instead, which needs nothing from you except a room with a decent window.
Which clothes work by the river?
A fitted dress or a soft knit that shows the shape of the bump, in a colour that stands apart from green grass and a pale hill: terracotta, deep blue, cream. Wear trainers to walk across and swap into prettier shoes once you reach the grass. Bring a light layer for the evening.
