Why choose Family session in Évora?
A family photographer in Évora plans around two things at once: the children’s mood and the temperature. Both are at their best early. The walled centre is compact, so getting a family with a pushchair to the meeting point is a short stroll from wherever you are staying rather than a taxi, and the session begins while everyone still has patience. The half hour belongs to them: if a toddler wants to inspect the fountain for five minutes, that becomes part of the story rather than a delay, and the spot is picked for shade and room to wander. Parents tend to relax once they see that nobody is going to be lined up and told to say cheese.
Where we photograph in Évora
Praça do Giraldo is the place we suggest for most families, as early as the children can manage. Under its arcades the light is even and indirect, which keeps small faces from squinting, and the fountain in the middle is something children want to walk to anyway. Before the café tables come out, the paving is open from one arcade to the other and a toddler can charge across it. The square around the Templo Romano is the other option for older children who can stand still for a few frames; it is more open to the sun, so it works best in the gentle hours. Neither involves traffic in the way the aqueduct street does, where cars still pass.
The best time in Évora
Mornings, with no real exception. In summer start at seven; by ten the stone is warm and the children are cross. In spring and in October a start at eight or nine is comfortable and the town is still quiet. Late afternoon has lovelier light and a worse mood, and with little ones the mood decides. From December to February the mornings are chilly yet bright, the centre nearly deserted, which makes it the easiest season to photograph a family here — wrap them in coats with some colour in them rather than black.

FAQ — Family session in Évora
Is the old town manageable with a pushchair?
The square itself is flat and wide. The streets around it are narrow and paved in stone, so a pushchair with sturdy wheels is fine and a light travel buggy will rattle. For a session in the square, the pushchair can be parked under the arcade and kept out of frame.
Can grandparents join, and does that change the price?
Grandparents are welcome, and the price for the session starts at €200 regardless; tell us the number of people when you book so the photographer plans the group frames. With a larger family the half hour gets tighter, so we start with the group shots while everyone is fresh.
What if it is too hot even at eight?
In July and August that can happen, and the answer is seven. If a heatwave makes even that unpleasant for small children, the session moves to another day at no cost. Bring water and a hat for the walk there, and take the hats off for the frames.
