Where we photograph in the Douro
Pinhão is the family location in this valley. It is flat, public and full of things children like looking at: trains in the station, blue tiles showing the harvest, boats on the river. Parents can relax because nobody is near a drop. The Galafura viewpoint is spectacular, but it is a high place with a long fall below it; with a two-year-old the photographer spends more energy on safety than on pictures. If you are staying at a quinta with a lawn or a level courtyard, that can work too — check with the owners and tell us when you book.
The best time in the Douro
Mornings. The valley warms quickly in summer and has no breeze to relieve it, so a session soon after breakfast keeps small children cheerful while the light on the station side is still soft. Spring is the kindest season: green slopes, mild air, few other visitors. The weeks after the harvest are just as calm and add colour to the vines. During the vindima, families staying on a working estate can sometimes include the picking in a few frames, but that is the estate’s call rather than ours.

FAQ — Family session in the Douro
Our children are three and six. Is 30 min long enough?
At those ages it is the right length. Small children give their best in the first stretch and their patience runs out soon after, so a longer session mostly adds frames of tired faces. The photographer starts with play rather than posing and takes the all-together picture while everyone is still fresh.
Can grandparents who do not walk far join us?
Yes, and that is another reason Pinhão suits families: the riverside is level, so nobody has to climb anything. Tell us when booking who needs a seat or some shade, and the photographer chooses a spot that suits them for the group frames, then moves around with the children separately.
What should we all wear?
Coordinated, not matching. Two or three colours that sit together — denim, white, a soft rust — read well against both stone and vines. Skip big logos and neon. Comfortable shoes matter more than usual here: children run along the river and adults end up kneeling to their height.
