A paved public road climbs all the way, so no hike precedes the session, and the viewing area is broad enough to put distance between you and whoever else came for sunrise. The hard part is the approach: a winding climb in the dark from Funchal, and a parking area that is full before the sky turns grey. Fanal is the alternative rather than an extra stop. When mist pools over that north-western upland, its gnarled laurels look almost theatrical, and couples who like quieter, moodier pictures sometimes prefer it. Under a blue sky it isn’t worth the journey, so a Fanal date stays flexible within your trip.
The best time in Madeira
Be up there roughly sixty minutes ahead of sunrise, so the car is parked and you have warmed up when colour starts. The cloud layer behaves most dependably through the warmer half of the year, which is also when departure times are earliest. Pack a jacket you are happy to appear in, since the summit is cold at dawn even in high summer. Fanal works the other way round, preferring the damp months when mist hangs over the plateau all morning. Whichever you pick, hold a spare morning free, because on Madeira the sky makes the final decision.

Who drives us up to Pico do Arieiro in the dark?
You do, or a driver you arrange; the photographer meets you at the top. It is a public road with plenty of bends, and from Funchal the climb takes the better part of an hour. Leave earlier than your navigation app suggests, because the last parking spaces disappear before first light.
What if we reach the top and find ourselves inside the cloud?
It does happen, even in summer. Pictures taken inside the cloud are soft, grey and can still be lovely, but if that is not what you came for, you will hear so honestly on the spot, and another morning is arranged within your stay wherever possible.
Could we do the session on one of the levada paths instead?
Some suit it well, but a number of them now require a paid entry, and the list has shifted more than once. If you have a favourite in mind, name it at booking; its current access rules and how it is lit at your hour are checked before anything is proposed.
