Two places earn it, and you pick between them. The beach is the default: cross the dune on the planks, and the open Atlantic with the light sinking over it is the backdrop for the whole session, with dune grass for the foreground when you want something closer. In spring there is a second choice that looks like nowhere else in the country: the paddies inland, when they are flooded and the water holds the sky. You stand on the public road or its verge, never in the fields, which are private farmland, and the reflection does the rest. If a front blows through, the pine tracks near Melides are the sheltered substitute.
The best time in Comporta
From May to September aim for the final hour before sunset on the beach, which in early summer puts you there well after eight. For the paddies the season matters more than the hour: they are flooded in spring, and May and June are when they look their best, with evening light lying flat across the water. September is a favourite for couples — the sea is still warm, the August crowd has gone back to Lisbon, and the evenings are long and still. A winter booking is beautiful in a stark way, with big skies and an empty shore, but has no plan B under a roof.

Can we do the beach and the rice fields in one booking?
Not in 30 min. They are a drive apart and both want the same low light, so splitting the time leaves two thin sets instead of one good one. Pick the paddies if you are here in May or June and want the picture nobody else from Portugal has; pick the beach for any other month of the year.
Do we need permission to stand in the paddies?
The fields are private agricultural land, so the session is made from the public roads beside them. That is no real restriction: reflections read best from slightly above the water, and the verge gives exactly that angle. Nobody wades in, the crop is left alone, and the storks stay where they are.
We are staying in Lisbon. Is it worth the trip for half an hour?
Only if you make an evening of it. It is a proper drive down from Lisbon, so come down in the afternoon, eat somewhere nearby afterwards, and treat the session as the reason for a day on this coast rather than a detour out of the city.
