Choose one of two settings. The first is the road climbing out of the village towards Peninha: open woodland, high banks of fern, long straight stretches where you can walk towards the lens for a minute at a time. It is public, free and, at the right hour, close to empty, though cars do pass and you will be steered onto the verge for them. The second is the old village itself, its steep lanes paved in polished limestone cubes, which only work early, before the day visitors fill them. The palaces are left out on purpose. Pena, Monserrate and the Castelo dos Mouros want written authorisation and a fee from Parques de Sintra for professional work, and Regaleira wants its own, which is a lot of arranging for a portrait the forest does better.
The best time in Sintra
From October to April the Serra is misty most mornings, and starting shortly after sunrise puts you in the softest light the area has. Summer is clearer and far busier, so the village lanes are an early-morning option only; the forest road is the better summer pick because the canopy keeps you in shade well into the morning. Steer clear of the centre in the middle of a July or August day, when the crowd is a bigger problem than the sun. Late afternoon can work on the road as well, but the mist that makes the place distinctive belongs to the morning.

What shoes should I wear on the forest road?
Something that copes with wet ground. The verges are soft and often muddy after a damp night, and moss on the stone edges is slick. Clean trainers or low boots in a neutral colour look fine in a walking frame; heels do not survive the first five minutes. In the village lanes the polished limestone is slippery even when dry, so the same advice holds there.
It will be cold up there in the mist, won’t it?
Colder and damper than Lisbon at the same hour, often noticeably. Choose an outer layer that belongs in the photographs, a chunky knit or a wool coat, rather than a jacket you will want off before every frame. Damp air also frizzes hair quickly, which is worth knowing if your look relies on a sleek finish; a little product before you set out goes a long way.
Could we do this inside Quinta da Regaleira instead?
Possible, but it changes the booking. Regaleira is run separately from the other palaces and asks for its own written permission and fee for professional photography, arranged ahead, on top of the entry ticket. Its famous well is a narrow spiral that only works in the first minutes after opening. For a walking portrait the open road simply gives more room and more time.
